Let me start by saying, I did a search on the site and looked through the plethera of threads but didn't find much as far as definitive answers so I will post the question as I am sure others are wondering or will wonder. As of 2010, what shoes did you guys use to build your trooper boots? I have heard a ton of people say that used such and such but that those shoes are no longer made so I need to find a relativly inexpensive shoe to use as the starting point of my boots. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The popular choice is the Athletic Works shoes from Walmart. Under $20 a pair.

thanks Rip, that gave me a good starting point. I am pretty sure that Athletic Works is either made by or has been bought by Starter as they had the same type of shoes with the same name. I ended up getting a pair of Eli shoes for $18, pic below:

Those look the same to me!

I bought several pair, when I bought mine. That gives me a spare pair if the current ones wear out or rip. They are cheap enough to do that.

Well, I finished 1 of my shoes and I thought I would get some feed back.

This was the shoe I used:

And this is the result (keep in mind it is a size 13!!! so may look a little different than some.

I haven't weathered them yet and there are some ink markings where my 2 year old son try to help me since he saw me 'marking' the shoes but other than that, tell me what you think.

Nicely done. You got those at Walmart? They don't keep the same shoe in stock for long but they seem to always have something similar. Same with Kmart and Target. I always check those three stores.

I found these while I was looking around for those shoes mentioned above.
These are available from Kmart. They are on sale through 4/4/10 for $14.99 (regularly 19.99)
There is a small graphic on the upper outsole towards the back but I figured that could be sanded off.
What do you think?

If you buy two pair online you get 1/2 off the second pair.

I use the Starters too. A marine vinyl, little vinyl glue, some velcro and pretty soon you got clone shoes. I'm working on a pair right now, actually.

as an after thought, I probably would have used a little square of vinyl to make the sides of the shoe flush, the area with the little air holes, so when the vinyl is pulled tightly, it looks more smooth. not that it matters but if I do it again, I will probably try that.

Yeah, that's a good thought, but once the other vinyl pieces, strap, and weathering are applied, you don't notice those bumps at all.

Is there a step by step tutorial somewhere that demonstrated how to apply the vinyl to the shoes?
